In Memoriam: Coach Jim Thomas

The HMRRC community is saddened by the passing of Coach Jim Thomas, a longtime mentor, runner, and friend to so many. Jim guided countless first-time marathoners through the Mohawk-Hudson training program, blending a tough-as-nails coaching style with genuine warmth and encouragement. He taught runners not just how to train, but how to believe in themselves, creating a welcoming community where effort, camaraderie, and laughter went hand in hand. Many local runners will remember Jim by his signature American-flag shorts and his remarkable speed well into his later racing years. Though he fell just shy of completing 100 marathons, his impact on our running community is immeasurable. Coach Jim’s legacy lives on in every runner he supported, challenged, and inspired. He will be deeply missed.
