Freihofer’s Run For Women 2023

by Christine Bishop

The chilly, wet race day weather did not dampen the spirit of the 2,391 racers who completed the 46th annual Freihofer’s Race for Women. Tristan Van Ord of Boone, N.C. won first place in 15:44 and walked away $3,000 richer. The pre-race favorite to win, Allie Keiffer, came in 8th.

The following quotes from the runners come from a Times Union article by Mark Singelais. Click here for article.

Not sure of her finish, Van Ord said, "I started hearing people's cheers, like maybe 50 meters (from the finish), and they were like, 'You got it, you got it!!" Van Ord said. "I was like, 'OK, they're not cheering for anyone else, so I think I'm good.' Honestly, coming down that hill, I could get passed. At the very end, I was like, 'Just keep going.'"

Van Ord did come to the race with an impressive result from the January 15 at Chevron Houston Marathon in Texas where she was the fourth woman overall and the first American female in a field of over 27,000 runners!

"I decided to do this race because I did the Houston Marathon and I knew I wanted to do maybe one more marathon before the (Olympic) trials," Van Ord said. "But I didn't want to do two more because that would be a lot. So, I decided to take this summer as like just doing some shorter races and just having some fun and doing something different."

Ryan, the master's champion who earned $1,000, said she stayed away from the younger elite runners to avoid going too fast early in the race.

"I was nervous this year, just expectations going in," Ryan said. "Internal pressure. You have that target on your back. I was just hoping to repeat and defend and we did that."
