Ed Thomas Winter Series Kicks Off December 9

by Jon Rocco

Winter struck a bit early this year, but HMRRC is set to go with its popular Winter Series. It all kicks off on Sunday, December 9, with the Doug Bowden Winter Series #1 (3M and 15K distances). These races, like all Winter Series races, are free to club members. For non-members/guests there is a $5 entry fee. Not a member, but looking to join to run the Winter Series at no cost? Click here. The races start and finish at the UAlbany athletic facilities with registration/sign-in inside the Physical Education building on the main floor starting an hour before race time.

Members are encouraged to take advantage of the perk and pre-register on-line to avoid longer “day of’ registration lines.” Pre-registration allows you to check-in on race day by simply initialing your name at the pre-registration tables. There is always a need for help at the Winter Series races. To register or volunteer at Winter Series events, click here.

Other races in the Ed Thomas Winter Series include WS#2 with the featured Hangover Half (13.1M) along with the Bill Hogan 3.5M (Tuesday January 1), WS #3 (3M, 10K, 25K) on Sunday January 13, WS #4 (3M 15K, 30K) on Sunday January 27, and WS #5 (4.5M, 10M, 20M) on Sunday February 17. A “snow date” of Sunday, February 24, has been established for WS#5/Winter Marathon in case we need to reschedule due to inclement or severe weather to safely put on the event for runners and volunteers.

All races start at 10:00 am other than WS#2 (New Year’s Day-Hangover Half) which begins at 12:00 pm and the Winter Series #5 20M which begins at 9:00 am and coincides with the start of the Winter Marathon. The Hangover Half and WS #5 10M races are once again part of HMRRC Grand Prix Series.

Post-race refreshments always include hot soup, breads, and coffee courtesy of Bountiful Bread along additional with fruit and cookies courtesy of Hannaford Supermarkets. Awards are presented to overall winners as well as Bountiful Bread coupons to the top two in 10 year age groups.

The Winter Series has historically been among HMRRC's most popular events. The success of the Series is brought on in a significant way by its volunteers. All members are encouraged to give back and help support and keep your fellow runners safe. Those wishing to volunteer are also encouraged to register on-line. Winter Series “Survivor Awards” are available to those who participate in all five Winter Series events, including volunteering in at least one. Those that become eligible for the award will be asked to complete ‘Survivor’ forms which will be available at WS#4 (HMRRC Membership Table). The ‘Survivor Award’ (this year’s award is pictured here) will be available for pick up at WS#5. Also, a picture for the Pace Setter will be taken before the race begins of all those who earn the Winter Series Survivor Awards.

In addition, you can help the Food Pantries feed the hungry this winter by bring canned food or make a cash donation at registration.  The Food Pantries are in need of soups, stews, spaghetti sauce, canned tuna and chicken, oatmeal, toiletries, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and laundry detergent.

We hope to see you on December and hope that you earn the coveted Winter Series Survivor Award!
