A brief description of the volunteer opportunities available at each race – large or small.

The Opportunities

COURSE MARSHAL

Job Description:

To direct runners along the course and to ensure runner safety by controlling keeping traffic entering the course

Qualifications:

  • Look good in dayglow vest
  • Ability to learn the course in the assigned area and to provide clear instructions to runners
  • Able to withstand variable weather conditions
  • Must be 18 or over
  • As a lead, willing to retrieve supplies needed and train others.

WATER STOP

Job Description:

Provide water and/or Gatorade for runners along the course

Qualifications:

  • Ability to pour water in a cup quickly
  • Able to withstand variable weather conditions
  • Willing to pick up cups and trash to leave the area as clean as it was BEFORE the race
  • As a lead, willing to retrieve supplies needed and train others

REFRESHMENTS

To put out food and other after-race nourishment for runners and to be sure there is enough for all

Qualifications:

  • Able to cut a bagel or orange without cutting self
  • Work well with oversized plastic gloves on hands
  • In case of lead position, able to calculate amount of food needed and willing to purchase or coordinate procurement

REGISTRATION

Job Description:

To organize and distribute bib numbers, shirts and other materials to the runners before the race

Qualifications:

  • Organizational skills a must
  • Data entry skills for pre-registration data entry
  • Willingness to learn basic information concerning the race to answer questions for runners
  • Ability to tolerate runners whose only concern is the race and their time

FINISH LINE/RESULTS

Job Description:

To determine what order the runners come in and to prepare necessary reports for award presentation

Qualifications:

·         Organizational skills helpful; a must for a lead position

·         Ability to keep people in order and moving in a straight line

·         Able to pull tags, write down numbers, push buttons, etc. as instructed by finish line lead
