Notes: 1932 was the inaugural year. This event was known as the Governor's Cup for 1932-37, the Bank-athon for
1974-79, the Hudson-Mohawk for 1988-89 and 1992-94, and the Community Health Plan for 1990-91. The event is best
known as the Price Chopperthon. The 1985-86 course was certified as point-to-point with a net drop of 7 m/km (excessive).
All courses were point-to-point and may be assumed to have a substantial drop except for the 1959 race that was
run from Albany to Schenectady (up hill).

* Winner of the 1957 Boston Marathon
John J. Kelley, "the younger," veteran Boston A.A. Marathoner, who teaches
school in Groton, Conn., won the National AAU 25 kilometer (15.5 miles) run from
Albany to Schenectady Sunday. His time was 1 hour six minutes 1 second, a
full six minutes ahead of second place finisher Rudy Mendez of the New
York Pioneer A.C.
Kelley, 5-6, 125 pound National AAU Marathon title winner the past four years
bested a field of 33 runners, of which 30 finished. The nationally know distance
runner grabbed the lead at the start, at the Capitol in Albany, and held his
advantage throughout the race. Veteran Albany favorite Johnny DeGloria started the
race but did not finish. The race was the sports feature of the Hudson-
Champlain and Schenectady County sesquicentennial celebration
Mayor Corning of Albany stated the race. Bill Leonard of Schenectady, former
national AAU vice president, directed the run. Carl Hardy of Albany, Adirondack AAU
president, handled arrangements.
The Boston squad won the team championship with 19 points. The Pioneer club was second
with 36.

event and winner of the 1936 championship, led the runners during the first two miles.

18 runners started in Schenectady's Central Park and ended at Lincoln Park Pool in Albany.
The race attracted several top distance runners from New York City, but the field was only
half the size of the previous year. For Mel Porter, who narrowly lost the Governor's Cup in 1932
and finished sixth in the 1034, the third time proved to be the charm. He took the lead after
two miles and soon built a commanding advantage. His winning time was three minutes faster than
Leslie Pawson and six minutes better than Jean Berthelot. Johnny DeGloria was the first local
runner, placing fifth out of 15 finishers, nearly 15 minutes behind Porter.

On July 20th thirty-two runners started from Charles Street in Schenectady and
ran straight down Albany-Schenectady Highway till they reached Clinton Avenue
where they detoured to finish with four laps on the new Bleeker Stadium track.
The race was part of Albany's 250th Birthday Party. It required a petit
foreign born Frenchman, running less than three years, to demonstrate to a crack
list of 32 veterans how a gruelling 20-kilometer grind from Schenectady to Albany
should be staged.
Led by this "dark horse," Jean Berthelot, who still speaks with a decided French
accent, the Millrose A.A. of NYC, swept the frist three place in the annual 20 km jog,
to outscore the other represented clubs and to triumph as a unit in the feature event
of the Dongan Charter Day celebration track and field meet held at Bleeker Stadium.
The Mercury club, which was nosed out for second place team honors in the distance run
by the Norfolk Young Men's club, sent across the tape its first representative in 16th place
in the person of Carroll Mansfield, who wound up ninth in the 1935 Schenectady-Amsterdam
marathon. John DeGloria, Albany's big hope was sorely outclassed as he finished in 24th
position, badly defeated.
No Schenectady to Albany Race in 1935! On July 14th Ellison
"Tarzan" Brown of Westerly, R.I., ran to an easy victory in an international field in a
full-length marathon race from Amsterdam to a point near the Schenectady city limits. Brown
was content to keep in the middle of the pack for the first half of the race. Then he overtook
the pacemakers and finished twenty-five minutes ahead in 2:55:56. The York AC with four men
among the leaders, won the team trophy.

Started in Schenectady at the Shuster Farm on the Albany-Schenectady Highway. They
followed the Schenectday-Guilderland road to Western Avenue which they took to South
Lake Avenue and then to New Scotland Avenue where they in front of the Ft. Orange Post
of the American Legion. Paul Mundy, representing the Millrose Club pulled ahead after
the frist two miles and was never challenged as he won handily in a time of 1:08.47. The
real race was the battle for second place. Albany's DeGloria had learned from his mistakes
of the previous years and started at a more moderate pace. He ran nearly all of the 20
kilometers in 2nd place. He toured the streets of Albany side by side with Leslie Pawson of
Pawtucket, Rhode Island. The two men were no strangers, having shared the lead of the 1933
Boston Marathon for several miles. Just as he had prevailed in Boston, Pawson sprinted for the
finish to edge DeGloria by a scant three seconds.

A field of 38 runners assembled in Schenectady to race for the national champion-
ship. Johnny DeGloria quickly took the lead. At one point he was more than 200 yds
ahead of the second place runner, Dave Komonen of Toronto, who was content to let
DeGloria set the early pace. It was an unusually hot day with the temperature in the
90's. At fire stations along the route, volunteers sprayed the runners from hoses and
offered orange slices. At the half way point DeGloria still held the lead, but his
advantage had bee reduced to 120 yards. When the runners passed the Albany city limits,
Komonen had taken over first place. As they turned off Central Avenue on to North Allen,
DeGloria clung to second place but was beginning to feel the effects of the head and his
early pace. Komonen steadily increased his lead and was the easy winner in the relatively
slow time of 1:30:06. He had concluded his victory lap on the Albany Academy track before
the second place runner, Paul Mundy of Philadelphia, came into sight. DeGloria finished
in seventh place, more than eight minutes behind Komonen, but one place ahead of Johnny
Kelley.
Event was sponsored by the Albany Junior Chamber of Commerce.

William Steiner of New York City finished first in the initial running of the
Governor's Marathon from Schenectady to Albany. Steiner ran the fifteen miles in
1 hour 24 minutes and 7 seconds to defeat Charles Porter of Brooklyn by about a
yard. Steiner's time was less than a minute off the world's record for the distance.
Johnny DeGloria of Albany came home in third place, and Fayette VanZile of Union
College was fourth. Eleven of the thirteen runners who started the race finished.
The run, staged as a pre-Olympic trial by the Adirondack Association of the A.A.U.,
was run in a light rain over road that were wet and sloggy. The first five runners
qualified for the Olympic Marathon tryout at Boston April 19.
The grind was started at Western Gateway Bridge in Schenectady by Mayor J. Ward White.
The finish was at the Capitol. Mayor John B. Thacher of Albany presented prizes.
Steiner received a cup, Porter a gold medal and DeGloria a silver medal. The other
eight finishers received bronze medals.
The race was originally scheduled for the fall of 1931 but an early snowstorm forced
it's postponement until the spring of 1932.
