Training for the Mohawk Hudson River Marathon

I would like to start a thread and hopefully get some input/opinions/advice/criticism/jokes/comments/witty observations/wise ass comments/general heckling/arrogant sarchoasm/know it all drivel/maybe even some critiques of what I do throughout this process.
I will try to keep up on the notes if you have any interest.  If not it will just add it to my narcissism and general feeling of self grandeur.
I am using the internet, books, forums etc to do this.  I do not have not trainer, running coach, group or past marathon experiences.
For whom the bell tolls....
For my schedule I am using the invaluable resource of Hal Higdon's Ultimate Marathon Training Guide.  GREAT BOOK!!!  I am currently on week three of his 18 week course, Intermediate I Level, which means at some point I have to skip a week in order to be on pace for the marathon. Wed/5 mi run
I have drastically changed my nutriton for the better. 6-7 serving of fruits/veggies. Very little red meat(once a week, Sunday dinners usually not the healthiest.  Healthy snacks, salads, chicken. No refined sugar, for the most part.  An occasional cookie or hershey kiss. A beer or 2 on Sun(gotta watch Deadwood and Entourage.  Needles to say I have dropped a few pounds for the better.
Currently I am doing most of my runs via treadmill.  I had shin splints and band syndrome last year and I hesitate to road run.
I do my Sunday long runs outside though to keep up the roadwork.  Right now I use the Colonie Crossings. I like the Mohawk Bike trail but it looks like a lot of it is on roads, the unlevel gutter runs kill my knees.  Can some one tell me if this is true, since the map is atrocious?
Enough babbling for now....must sleep.
All is well,
Kyle

Re: Training for the Mohawk Hudson River Marathon

None of the Mohawk bike path is on roads. It crosses one every now and then but it is an old railroad line and therefore entirely separate from the adjancent roadway. (read Ramblin Gramp's history of the bike path in the articles section)

I've already pointed out that a major negative for the next few weeks is deer flies, but there is a long list of positives. Places to park with water fountains, mile markers from the marathon and YMCA mileposts, training groups to meet for company, scenic and flat except for a few shot steep climbs.

You need to choose your starting point, Lyons Park (the old train station) in Niskayuna is good, also the Babe Ruth ball fields at Blatnick park, or if you are farther north, the Colonie Town Park. There are also intermediate parking locations all along the path.

Re: Training for the Mohawk Hudson River Marathon

There actually is a small part of the Mohawk bike trail that is on Town Roads - I think a small portion on Island View Road, to get you under the Northway.

The Mohawk River Community Partners group is actually working towards getting a bike/ped bridge over the Northway so that the trail can stay entirely off road.

Re: Training for the Mohawk Hudson River Marathon

There is a new Spring 2006 edition of the Capital District Regional Bike-Hike Trail map, published by the Capital District Transportation Committee.  I just received mine in the mail a few days ago.  It's huge and has all sorts of great information on it.  It includes details of the bike path from Rotterdam Junction all the way to the Corning Preserve.  It also includes a map of the Crossings, trails in Bethlehem, East Greenbush, Rensselaer Lake, Stillwater and several others.

http://www.cdtcmpo.org/

I think you can request via e-mail, though the site is not too clear on that.  You may want to call instead.  Check the "About CDTC" page for the phone number.

Re: Training for the Mohawk Hudson River Marathon

"THESE GO TO 11", said Nigel Tufnel,. My first EVER 11 mile run. PR @ 9:23 per!  The great part about the training schedule I am using is that the Sunday long run becomes an almost weekly PR, so I don't dread tham as much as I thought I would (shaking my head yes).  Must admit that I slacked a bit and only got 3 of 5 runs in while on vacation, I kept spilling the beer on me so I just stopped running after the 3rd try.
Back on track this week and looking forward to my summer schedule...week 6!
Is anybody running the marathon this year?
All is well
Kyle

How's it going Kyle?  Are you still on track for next month's marathon?  Let us know about your progress.   I hope all is still well.
